All About Fashion Blogging and Me

I get a ton of emails each weeks asking me for help or advice for those wanting to start a fashion blog. I also get a few questions about me too so I'm going to try to sum everything up in this post. firstly i love my blog. i spend hours thinking up posts, finding events to cover and shopping to maintain this blog. I realized that it's not just a hobby anymore. it's become a full-time job. one that i'm mostly paid for with awesome comments and amazing emails and meeting incredible people and being able to be "In" the fashion industry attending fashion week. this blog has given sooooo much to me and it's my baby so thanks for reading!

How do I start a blog?
I get this question a lot. It's pretty simple to start a blog you can either go through Blogger.com or Wordpress.com or Tumblr.com. Those are the big three. If your blog is more photo oriented I would recommend Tumblr where your images can reach the most people and be reblogged quicker. I use blogger. It's free and I bought my domain name for $10 a year. The layouts aren't as good as wordpress though and there can be a lot of glitches.

How do I market my blog?
I'm still figuring this out myself. Basically you have to be everywhere and by everywhere I mean on most major social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Tumblr. You don't have to be on every single social media platform just the ones that work for you. I really like instagram and facebook and youtube the most. But everyone's different. Find which platforms give you the most feedback and exposure. Also attend events in your area that relate to your blog. Create business cards for your blog.

How do I work with/approach brands?
If you really like a brand find the PR information for them and email them. Introduce yourself, your blog, what you're about and ask if they'd like to collaborate. Its really that simple. The worst they can say is no so don't be afraid to ask. Build a relationship with that brand by tweeting them, leaving messages on their instagram or facebook. They will start to take notice or atleast begin to recognize your name. If you wear that brand in a post tweet it and make sure to @ that brand so they can see it as well.

How do blog/brand collaborations work?
This is a tough question to answer because they are all very different. Sometimes a brand will ask you to review an item (which if you're a fashion blogger) that means wearing an item in an outfit post and linking back to the brand/site. Those collaborations are basically "For Product" collaborations. Other collaborations may involve doing a giveaway for a brand, or a sponsored post about that brand/item/event. You can also be an ambassador for a brand (that usually involves payment). It all really depends on what you and the brand want out of the deal.

How do you get into fashion week?
I get at least 5 emails a week asking me this. Trust me its really not that hard to get into New York Fashion Week. I did a whole video series on how to get into fashion week:
 Video 1, Video 2, Video 3

What kind of camera do I use?
When I'm shooting things I use a Canon T2i with standard lens. When I do video I use the long lens (for fashion week videos). For outfit photos my photographer Tiona D uses a Canon 7D with 50mm lens. But she has a wide range of lens and an external flash (which I know nothing about). She is based in New York and is awesome and usually available so if you are looking for a fly photog check her out.

How do I have a blog and work at the same time? Do I take outfit photos daily?
It's pretty easy. I just don't post everyday. I plan a lot of my posts in advance. I take most of my outfit photos in one day and post them throughout 2 week increments. See how I put together outfit posts HERE.

Do I make money from my blog?
Yes. But its not all from just blogging. The money I make from my blog comes from advertising, sponsored posts, ambassadorships, sales from advertising links, my blog store, my thrift ebook and my thrifting shopping tours. Hustle hard.

Now moving on to the questions about me...........

How tall are you and how much do you weigh?
I'm 5'6'' tall and I weigh 130 lbs (last I checked which was like 4 months ago since I think I may have lost a few pounds).

What do you do outside of fashion blogging?
I have a doctorate degree in physical therapy. So I treat patients 4-5 days a week. Just started working for myself doing contract work and it feels great to be my own boss!

Where do I shop?
I do a lot of thrifting, if you search Thrift in my search bar it will bring up pretty much every post where I've thrifted something and tell you where I thrifted it from. Goodwill, Housing Works and Vintage Thrift and Beacons Closet are some of my favorites. I do a lot of shopping at Loehmanns and Zara as well. Online I shop ASOS, Revolve Clothing and Lulus.com.

What is that red lipstick I always wear and that dark lipstick I always wear?
Red: Stila Fiery
Purplish: NARS Train Bleu

Where do I live?
Harlem, Uptown, Upper Manhattan whatever you'd like to call it lol

What's the most affordable area to live in NY?
yes I get tons of people emailing inquiring about moving to NY...lol. If you want to live in Manhattan the main island then Harlem or Washington Heights are the cheapest places to live (you will also get a lot more space for your money). Its also only a 20 minute train ride to any other part of the city. Inner Brooklyn isn't bad either. I can't speak on anywhere else because I've only ever lived in Manhattan.

Am I single?
yes but happily dating lol.

Well that's all folks. If you have any other questions leave them in the comments section and I will answer every single one. As long as its not crazy...lol.

what the hell is a fashion blogger??

it's happened so many times. i meet someone new. we are discussing the weather then my awesome new shoes i'm wearing the heck out of and then there's that inevitable question:
them: "so what do you do?"
me: "i'm a fashion blogger!"
them: (weird face as if they are thinking really hard about something followed by awkward smile)
me: *thinking to myself why the hell did they just give me the screw face*
them: "ohhhhh thats interesting...what does a fashion blogger do?"
me: *thinking to myself AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH* masked with polite smile

its true a lot of people don't know what a fashion blogger is. even with the likes Rumi, Chiara, Aimee and Leandra, breaking down all kinds of blogger barriers to the mainstream fashion know. These bloggers within the blogging community and within the fashion community don't even need last names. Even so this profession isn't as well known as one may think. Although at the present moment it is fairly oversaturated. Some brands have stood up and taken a keen notice in bloggers and the benefits of working with bloggers. brands such as Rebecca Minkoff, Schutz Shoes, Dannijo, Coach and even T.J. Maxx are expanding and getting the word out with the help of well known bloggers. these brands GET IT. some older brands and brands that havent fully accepted the integration of social media into their marketing are getting left in the dust. But its not because they don't want to conform, its that they just don't know how.
Some brands are clueless. They have no idea what bloggers do, how bloggers can help build their social media presence or even how to approach us. What matters is they we (bloggers) teach brands especially their marketing and PR departments about what we do.

here is a little video synopsis of what I do as a fashion blogger. it includes: outfit posts, video posts, shopping, sharing where i shop, attending fashion events and covering fashion events. I am the editor and chief of Fashion Steele NYC as well as the social media department, often times the photographer and videographer. I am the accountant, the makeup artist, the hair stylist and stylist. I am the creative director, buyer, intern and CEO of Fashion Steele NYC. it may look like its all fashion shows and lipstick....but honey...it's so much more work than that!

The above is an actual email that was sent to me.
What they did right: Address me by name! Those Dear Blogger/Influencer emails get deleted immediately
What they did wrong: Try to sell me something via email, assumed i'd write a simple post
WTF, a simple post would be fine?
Obviously the sender of this email has no idea what goes into making a blog post. They definitely didn't check out my blog because I rarely do accessory specific post! It was infuriating really.
I also get atleast 20 emails a day asking me to do an outfit post wearing an item that a brand will gift me.
And this is why i usually decline.

THIS IS WHAT I DO AS A BLOGGER FOR AN OUTFIT POST
  • Hair and makeup (seriously i don't just roll outta bed looking effortlessy stunning like this {insert sarcasm here}) it takes some time to tame this coif and to get these eyebrows in check. if fact curling my hair alone takes about 1.5 hours and BB cream is $34 a pop!
  • Styling an outfit. Yes... from the necklace down to the shoes. I tear my closet apart putting together the perfect outfit. Trying things on...taking things off. leaving a bloody mess of my bedroom
  • Scheduling a photoshoot with my photographer whom I PAY! No... Mr. PR guy, i don't have a photographer boyfriend who can take my photos at every moment of the day. I shell out cold hard cash to have a photographer shoot me at a location of my choosing...and speaking of location here comes the next bullet point....
  • Scouting a location for the outfit shoot which can be damn near anywhere in NYC.
  • Editing photos. Editing photos for one blog post can take upwards to an hour. Not to mention picking out which photos to use from about 100 of them, editing them and uploading them to a hosting site that makes the photos larger takes a huge chuck of time.
  • Creating a blog post. let me tell you...there is nothing SIMPLE about it! I create well written and engaging content. I scout sources online where my readers can find what I'm wearing. I include relevant links to websites and I tag all the appropriate labels. This non simple blog post takes about 2 hours to create!
  • Promotion, Promotion Promotion. I then promote my blog post on all my social media channels. I usually tweet about it and instagram a photo from my latest post. Of course I include it on my tumblr and facebook also tagging and adding all brands included in the post.
* and this doesn't even include when i do a video post for my youtube channel. editing video is 3x the work as editing photos!!!!!

Thus for all this hard work, time and money i put into creating one blog post doesn't come close to being compensated by the $32 dress you want to send me to promote your brand. Bloggers who are serious about blogging and aren't just in it for the free digs understand this concept. brands wont dare email an editor at Marie Claire and ask for free promotion and advertising. I am by no means a Marie Claire level publication but I still have a following and influence and what I can bring to a brands bottom line MATTERS. Blogging is a Business. so to the bloggers out there...i want to say stop short changing yourself because you are ruining it for the rest of us. i'm not saying you have to be paid to do everything....im saying
KNOW YOUR WORTH.

there's no place like home

you all know the color red isn't really my kind of color. but every since getting and wearing
this fabulous red dress by Synderela i have secretly been craving all things red. i think this is the start of a beautiful relationship between that naughty color and I. fast forward to two weeks ago, i'm perusing my local Zara when #KABOOM i see these fire red suede booties.
i couldn't contain my enthusiasm and straight out busted into the running man and probably scared off a few patrons. of course they didn't have my size (my gargantuan feet ruin my life) but luckily they did online. ahhh the mystical powers of the internet have once again come to the rescue.

Top: Zara | Shorts: Forever 21| Booties: Zara | Bag: M.A.C. Mini c/o Rebecca Minkoff
Sunnies: Ray Ban | Bracelet: c/o MARTI | Lipstick: Stila Fiery | Ring: H&M

these are like the modern day cool girl Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) booties right?!
but really there is no place like home and home to me is North Carolina as well as my current residence in Harlem. I will be needing a much needed rest and relaxation trip back to NC after the madness that is New York Fashion Week takes place. No matter how old i get my mom will still make me breakfast (cheese toast my fav) and want to take me shopping.

business of blogging

so I've been wanting to do a more fashion business attire outfit post. this my loves is it! if I all of a sudden got called to do some awesome magazine styling this is what I'd wear.
I get a lot of questions...mostly on my Lookbook.nu asking what to wear for interviews in fashion.
So here it is darlings. It's chic and flattering but still business attire with a pop giving the use of color.
I also want to address a lot emails I get about getting started with blogging as well.

Skirt: H&M (Old) see it worn differently here | Top: Zara | Shoes: Zara Basic Sandal
Lipstick: MAC Red | Ring: Top Shop

I really love this skirt. So much so that I have it in black and off white. Hey when I like something I have to get the most out of it. I am realizing that more and more if I really like something I should buy it because in New York City things sell out like hotcakes. A lot like these Zara shoes. I waited weeks for them to restock and when i finally got a 4am email alert..I hopped up so quick and bought these right away! lol. Ohh the things we do for shoes!
Check out a video post of this outfit on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL.

So to the business of blogging.
Here are a few questions I get on a regular basis:

How do I manage to work full time and blog?
It's hard. I don't have a job in fashion...I work in health. So I'm not running around in fabulous clothing during the week unless its after work. I hardly ever do "daily outfit post" because thats not realistic for me. I pick out 4-8 outfits and shoot them during 1 day a week and post them throughout the week. Now these outfits do get worn...just maybe not on that exact day. Check out this post video on how exactly I do an outfit post. I try to get all my post together during the weekends and post them throughout the week. I shop inbetween lol.

Do I shoot my own photos?
In the beginning I did but quickly realized it was too time consuming. I have a photographer. I've had her since my blog began. Her name is Samantha and she's awesome. She don't work for free..I pay her for her work. This is a hobby and I set money aside to be able to do this on a monthly basis because I love it and its important to me. I also have good friends who may step in from time to time and photograph for me. I use a Canon T2i with standard lens for photos and video.

How to get more followers?
I still consider myself a rookie blogger. I have been at it for a little over a year and a half. I must admit that getting a following is hard but you just have to let it happen naturally. I promote myself. I go to fashion industry events and network. I never leave the house without my blog business cards. Networking in person is awesome but you can also network online. Promote yourself on all social media that works for you. I like facebook, twitter, instagram and lookbook.nu. Those are the ones that work best for me. But you have to find whats right for you. Also post often.

How do I get brands to work with me?
Some are from networking and being a part of blogger groups/clubs. I would say about 30% is from networking. The other 70% are just brands that approach me. I've reached out to a few brands but not many. I think when brands see that you are consistent and have a unique voice and audience they want to work with you. I've been really lucky. I feel now that I'm at a point where I can start reaching out to brands. I also have a set template letter of what I will and wont do when a brand approaches me.

Do I feel there is racism in fashion blogging?
Yes. I've seen it. I know I have to work twice as hard and be more consistent and just more on point all the time to get further in the fashion blogger business. I see the same 5 girls in New York City get blogging job after job after job and honestly I'm not mad at it. It really just motivates me to be the best effing blogger I can be by being consistent and unique. There was a great article on this issue done by Folake Huntoon of Style Pantry for Chictopia. Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily also recently spoke about the issue in a Style Video. As Claire mentioned in the video Vogue did a great piece on the subject of race in fashion as well; Is fashion racist?  I'm also happy to announce that I was chosen to be a moderator/panelist for the first ever Style Bloggers of Color Conference next weekend so stay tuned for posts about all the happenings in ATL.

What blogs/bloggers do I go to for inspiration?
Just check the sidebar...I check them all daily. For a kick in the ass I check out Karla's Closet. Looking at her blog makes me instantly step my game up 100% when I'm blogger slackin'. I check out Karen of Where did u get that simply because shes awesome and doing her thing. Peony Lim for style inspiration and ThisThatBeauty for all beauty related inspiration. I also frequent Tamu of
All the Pretty Birds for fashion inspiration.

How do I get into fashion week?
Really I have it down to a science now but i did a complete video series on this on my
Youtube Channel Fashion Steele NYC TV.
Video 1
Video 2
Video 3
It's really NOT that hard. All you have to do is the WORK.

Number one tip I'd give to someone wanting to break into fashion/fashion blogging?
Have thick skin. You will be told "no" a lot. Don't take things so personally. Be prepared for the sometimes brutal world of fashion. Blogging communities can be cliquish and sometimes down right childish. Just have thick skin...and always believe in yourself and remain positive.

I hope this post has helped all those who have emailed. With that being said...I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone who reads my blog and comments and emails and tweets and facebooks and just everything. It means a lot to me and is much appreciated. And if you are new...Welcome and I hope you'll stay awhile.

If you have any questions/comments I'd love to hear what you have to say.
 Leave a comment for me.
